The Limit
Oil on canvas 40x30
My work inextricably contains elements of blues and jazz. There's always improvisation and syncopation... healing... &contemplation.
What motivated The Limit was a stretch in my life that seemed particularly pungent with adversity.
Because hard times are a regular companion, I figure you gotta find ways to make them useful. With that said, I wanted to do a painting that'd give hope, that I could contort hard times into something abstract but positive. The piece became a study on turning pain and experience into artistic form, without overtly stating that fact.
The Uncarved Block
Episode 2- featuring Casual of Hieroglyphics - approx. 13mins
For this episode of The Uncarved Block, we find ourselves with the legendary bay area rapper, Casual, aka Smash Rockwell. If you like Hip Hop, then you probably already know Casual and the Hiero collective, but if you don't, please do your homework... http://www.hieroglyphics.com/ They're a part of the foundation of Hip Hop & American culture and rank as one of the most prolific musical groups of all time... great artists and have been hella Independent.
In typical Uncarved fashion, the piece gives us an intimate chance to hang out with an Underground King at his home in Oakland.
Casual is #Rapgod.
"Pu" is often translated as "the uncarved block," and refers to a state of pure potential which is the primordial condition of the mind before the arising of experience. The concept of Pu points to perception without prejudice, i.e. beyond dualistic distinctions such as right/wrong, good/bad, black/white, beautiful/ugly. It is a state of mental unity which places the practitioner into alignment with the Way."
I hope you enjoy this month’s showing,
