American United
Oil on canvas - 18x30
2002
I wanted to do a piece to help organize some feelings, premonitions and concerns I was having in a post 9-11 America.
I'll talk more about this painting as the month goes on.
The Uncarved Block - Little Brother
Video - 13:56
On the TV puppet, we premier footage from The Uncarved Block, our back in the day avant-garde hip hop show. In this episode, we go back to 2004 and spend some time with the hip hop group Little Brother.
"When you discard arrogance, complexity and a few other things that get in the way, sooner or later you will discover the simple, childlike and mysterious secret known to those of the Uncarved Block: Life is Fun."

as for the painting, WOW. so much to talk about; where to begin? the poor Are getting poorer. :/ we, the people, Are being extorted and pumped with fear.. the painting makes me feel sad because i don't know what we can do for ourselves.. how do we fight those who are so much more "powerful" than we are? Chemical.. Oil.. Protein.. those are the biggest opponents you can find....
"gamblin' is my nature,
Ramblin' is my game,
Deal me out your hardest card,
I'll win this goddam game."
-Woody Guthrie
Beyond attractiveness, I try to infuse emotion and concept into my form. Attempting to achieve a beautiful filth.
Here's a little color breakdown of the American United piece
The black paint is a thick, chunky crude.
The red is also thick and bold, but is segmented by the black crude.
The blue is dripping and falling from its form.
The white is dirty and corrupted by an invasive toxic green.
The writing is an unmanicured, reckless plea.
That day those towers fell was an impact filled one. Cutting into the American fabric. Ripples were clearly set in motion that would alter and scar the path of man forever. The red paint in American United represents the entry point of that wound. The space where the twin towers stood is the cut.
The black paint is the most dominant element on the canvas, but does not feel organic... Maybe accidental or forced. It's invasive and corrupting. Thick and overrunning like an oil spill. The dominance of the black paint segments the entire canvas, but most of all, this overbearing force chops through the bright red injuries, cutting into America's soft flesh. In a lot of ways, the black paint in this piece represents the opportunists that implant themselves in tragedy. Parceling up the pain for advantage, confusing the trauma and circumstances. I suppose this phenomenon is part of the USA's nature... If you look at a map of the country, we are a segmented people who camouflage our sins in segmented realities. Therefore, you could also say that the black paint represents borders. And if that, then the following question would be... Who defines those borders?
The blue paint, like the sky, is falling. From the upper right corner of the piece drips a faint blue paint. The structure or layout of the piece is a play on the American flag, with its color scheme, as well as its stripes and stars. The blue in the painting is representative of the flag and the American sky that seems to be falling since fall of 2001.
Once a pure white, that could've been said to have signified our freedom, is now corrupted by the greed and shortsightedness of opportunists and war. Our freedoms have been held hostage by alchemists who've transformed money into bombs. We've come to find... cash and missiles combust at similar rates.
I admit... I'm a reckless scribe. "The Poor Are Getting Poorer" is unstenciled and unmeasured. Written in an unapologetic freehand. This plea represents the neglected voices of the margins and its simplicity should give accessibility to everyone. If anything can be taken from American United, it'd be that nothing breeds poverty like war and because of our inability to address trauma with compassion, we, as a people, have been headed down a poorer path since 9/11. Even a dummy could tell you that.
